Duet Emmo - Or So It Seems
Mute, 1983Duet Emmo was a one off collaboration between Daniel Miller, Graham Lewis and Bruce Gilbert spawning an album and single, both titled ‘Or So it Seems’ in 1983. Lewis and Gilbert were both members of Wire until 1979 when the band split up. All three had been friends for a long time. They had all been using the same studio, Blackwing, and the same engineer, Eric Radcliffe. An initial project had been suggested in 1980 but the success of Depeche Mode and Yazoo had kept Miller busy until the end of 1982. Lewis and Gilbert had both been releasing their own material under the name Dome. Duet Emmo was an anagram of Mute and Dome.

Y Pants were three women artists - Barbara Ess, Virgina Piersol and Gail Vachon. They mainly played at art spaces and had their own unique sound derived from the their unusual instrumentation. They based their sound around an amplified toy piano and toy drum set and a ukelele played through a distortion unit. Later they would add an electric bass and a synth. Barbara was well known for her fanzine 'Just Another Asshole' and as well as being Glenn Branca's girlfriend had played with him in The Static and The Theoretical Girls. He produced this debut ep. The lead track from the ep - 'Off The Hook' is a cover of The Rolling Stones song and despite the unusual instrumentation fits in very well with the ESG / Bush Tetras sound. It has a very primitive rhythm but sounds like a blueprint for what would today be called punk funk. Branca did a great production job on it and it has some lovely touches such as the addition of a faked phone conversation. The other songs are more No Wavesque but all the Y Pants songs have a certain unique naive charm to them. They only existed for a couple of years and went on to release an album called 'Beat It Down' on Branca's Neutral label which was produced by another New York legend, Wharton Tiers. After that, they returned to their art pursuits which is what they continue to do to this day. Apparently they still keep in touch and all meet up every year on each other's birthdays.

Jónsi & Alex - Riceboy Sleeps

Riceboy Sleeps is a collaboration between Jón Þór Birgisson (singer of post-rock band Sigur Rós) and his boyfriend Alex Somers (from Parachutes).
The music tends to be more ethereal and experimental than that of Sigur Rós and "played solely on acoustic instruments in Iceland and then endlessly toyed with on solar-powered laptops in a raw food commune in some far corner of Hawaii".
The first duo's album will feature only acoustic instrumental music and the collaboration of the string quartet Amiina (who are Sigur Rós' official string quartet), and the Kópavogsdætur Choir.
Alex said about the name of the project, "When I met Jonsi, I was really, really poor and I was just living off of rice mostly and I was sleeping too much so Jonsi was writing a song while I was asleep one day and he named it Riceboy Sleeps."
