Hava Narghile: Turkish Rock Music 1966-1975

Great collection of vintage psychedelic rock music from Turkey. With 22 tracks, spanning the years 1966-1975, this collection is a great introduction to the fanatastic, long-lost Middle Eastern acid rock scene. These bands raved it up in Istanbul nighclubs, blending the Western garage-psych rock of the era with Turkish folk influences (electic fuzz saz!), bellydancing beats, and all manner of "exotic" flourishes. Of the 17 artists on here, only a few names were already known to us, mainly from that aforementioned Turkish Delights lp or as the Turkish entries on the fab Love Peace & Poetry: Asian Psychedelic Music compilation. Those would be the amazing Mogollar (two tracks), guitar hero Erkin Koray, Mavi Isiklar, and Baris Manco. And none of their tracks are duplicated between this comp and those other two [and there's no overlap with anything on the more recent Turkish Love, Peace & Poetry volume either]. Of the many cuts on here, everyone will have their own favorites, certainly there's many killer ones. Dionysus' Bacchus Archives imprint has done a colorful job with the packaging, illustrated with promo photos and 7" sleeves. And every track gets a good paragraph of information, so by listening and reading you'll become hip to the history of the whole Turkish psych happenin'.

The box set was released as a compromise. The band's manager, Rob Gretton, had originally envisioned a box set called Recycle, which would feature all the singles New Order had released, one single per CD, in a grand 20 CD box. However, London Records deemed this as too excessive, and the idea was shelved. New Order released Get Ready in 2001 and a year later Retro surfaced.

The CD's each have a particular theme: Pop, Fan, Club and Live. Each one was selected by a friend of the band. In the UK, came with a fifth disc which featured rare tracks.

Back From The Grave

Unlike many garage rock compilations, the Back From The Grave series focuses exclusively on the rawer and more aggressive side of the genre. Psychedelic rock is categorically excluded. The series also includes very few pop or folk oriented songs. As a result, the albums are primarily populated by louder songs that are characterized by fuzztone guitars, rough vocals, and are clearly influenced by groups such as Rolling Stones, Yarbirds, the early Kinks, and the Pretty Things. The lyrics and performances tended to focus on anger, lust, and cheating girlfriends, matching the often chaotic music. According to the liner notes, the songs were recorded by American groups, between 1964 and 1967. {read more}

Richard Hell - Spurts: The Richard Hell Story

Hell is one of punk's most literate innovators; like Patti Smith, his work is as influenced by Rimbaud or Ginsberg as it is by the New York Dolls. He was one of the originators of the whole "punk" attitude, as Malcolm McLaren came back to London in the mid 70's with all kinds of ideas for clothes to sell at Sex and ways to dress up his young hangers-on after going downtown and seeing Hell and Smith. And Hell is also a classicist who understands the importance of having a brilliant guitarist at his side...this collection includes Johnny Thunders, Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd, Thurston Moore and the incredible, underrated, lamented Robert Quine.

Y Pants

Periodic Document, 1998

Y Pants were three women artists - Barbara Ess, Virgina Piersol and Gail Vachon. They mainly played at art spaces and had their own unique sound derived from the their unusual instrumentation. They based their sound around an amplified toy piano and toy drum set and a ukelele played through a distortion unit. Later they would add an electric bass and a synth. Barbara was well known for her fanzine 'Just Another Asshole' and as well as being Glenn Branca's girlfriend had played with him in The Static and The Theoretical Girls. He produced this debut ep. The lead track from the ep - 'Off The Hook' is a cover of The Rolling Stones song and despite the unusual instrumentation fits in very well with the ESG / Bush Tetras sound. It has a very primitive rhythm but sounds like a blueprint for what would today be called punk funk. Branca did a great production job on it and it has some lovely touches such as the addition of a faked phone conversation. The other songs are more No Wavesque but all the Y Pants songs have a certain unique naive charm to them. They only existed for a couple of years and went on to release an album called 'Beat It Down' on Branca's Neutral label which was produced by another New York legend, Wharton Tiers. After that, they returned to their art pursuits which is what they continue to do to this day. Apparently they still keep in touch and all meet up every year on each other's birthdays.
