The Primitives - The Ostrich / Sneaky Pete 7"
In 1963, Reed moved to New York City, and began working as an in-house songwriter for Pickwick Records. In 1964, he scored a minor hit with the single "The Ostrich", a parodic novelty song of popular "dance songs" such as "The Twist" that included lines such as "put your head on the floor and have somebody step on it." His employers had felt the song had hit potential, and arranged for a band to be assembled around Reed to promote the recording. The ad hoc group, called The Primitives, included Welsh musician John Cale, who had recently moved to New York to study music and was playing viola in composer La Monte Young's Theater of Eternal Music along with Tony Conrad. Cale and Conrad were both surprised to find that for "The Ostrich" Reed tuned each string of his guitar to the same note. This technique created a drone effect similar to their experimentation in Young's avant garde ensemble. Disappointed with Reed's performance, Cale was nevertheless impressed by Reed's early repertoire (including "Heroin"), and a partnership began to evolve.

Ratas Del Vaticano ("Rats of the Vatican") are a quartet hailing from Monterrey, Mexico, who assail ears with a most excellent assemblage of punk spew that can best be pitched as "KBD-like" Some of the slicker dicks out there will be familiar with Mocosos Pateticos ("Pathetic Kids") already, as it was available for a short time in 2008 as a download on David Serrano's Nene label.

Hava Narghile: Turkish Rock Music 1966-1975
Great collection of vintage psychedelic rock music from Turkey. With 22 tracks, spanning the years 1966-1975, this collection is a great introduction to the fanatastic, long-lost Middle Eastern acid rock scene. These bands raved it up in Istanbul nighclubs, blending the Western garage-psych rock of the era with Turkish folk influences (electic fuzz saz!), bellydancing beats, and all manner of "exotic" flourishes. Of the 17 artists on here, only a few names were already known to us, mainly from that aforementioned Turkish Delights lp or as the Turkish entries on the fab Love Peace & Poetry: Asian Psychedelic Music compilation. Those would be the amazing Mogollar (two tracks), guitar hero Erkin Koray, Mavi Isiklar, and Baris Manco. And none of their tracks are duplicated between this comp and those other two [and there's no overlap with anything on the more recent Turkish Love, Peace & Poetry volume either]. Of the many cuts on here, everyone will have their own favorites, certainly there's many killer ones. Dionysus' Bacchus Archives imprint has done a colorful job with the packaging, illustrated with promo photos and 7" sleeves. And every track gets a good paragraph of information, so by listening and reading you'll become hip to the history of the whole Turkish psych happenin'.

Red Shark - Le Fin
Bite Back! Tapes, 1986
Totally unknown mid 80s band here. Blending DIY experimentalism, with floating psych atmospheres and eastern influences, this gem here has wrongly remained buried in awareness for more than 20 years. I think it's time to people get to know it. It reminds many things and yet nothing. Isn't this a sign of geniousness? No more infos available though, except those mentioned on the cover. In part reminds me early TV Personalities, early Jesus and Mary Chain and even some Fall elements. All those blended with ultra stoned eastern elements and Velvet Underground influences and bluesy touches give an awesome result. It's so bad they seem not to have released anything else and even worst that no one has digged this out through all these years...

Los Tepetatles were a garage rock and roll band in which were some people who today are important to the Mexican intellectual world. The members of this magnificent band were: Carlos Monsivais (aka Monsi): Writer and cultural critic; Alfonso Arau: Writer and film director, Julián Bert: Musician who even played with Bill Haley and The Comets; Chava Flores: Accountant? Poet!... And Jose Luis Cuevas, a man whose drawings and etchings are just awful...
This was recorded in 1965. Here they are, The Mexican Kinks, Trashmen, Count five, all of them but more chidos!

Back From The Grave

Unlike many garage rock compilations, the Back From The Grave series focuses exclusively on the rawer and more aggressive side of the genre. Psychedelic rock is categorically excluded. The series also includes very few pop or folk oriented songs. As a result, the albums are primarily populated by louder songs that are characterized by fuzztone guitars, rough vocals, and are clearly influenced by groups such as Rolling Stones, Yarbirds, the early Kinks, and the Pretty Things. The lyrics and performances tended to focus on anger, lust, and cheating girlfriends, matching the often chaotic music. According to the liner notes, the songs were recorded by American groups, between 1964 and 1967. {read more}
